Uttrakhand :1,300 people rescued

A total of 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are conducting rescue and relief operations amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand, said NDRF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mohsen Shahedi on Wednesday.

New Delhi [India] : Shahed informed that as many as 1,300 people had been evacuated and taken to safe places acorss the state, while 46 people have lost their lives. “A total of 17 teams of NDRF are carrying out rescue and relief operations in Uttarakhand, which includes teams from Delhi, Dehradun, two teams from Uttar Pradesh and six teams which were already deployed in the state as a part of pre-Monsoon deployment. 1,300 people have been evacuated and carried to safer places,” said Shahedi . As per the NDRF DIG, Nainital, Almora, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar are the most affected dicticts by heavy rains in the state, “As per information from the state, 46 people have lost their lives so far, 15 people have been injured will nine are still missing. About 20-25 houses have been completely damaged,” added the DIG.


The continuous rainfall in the hilly state has witnessed flooded roads, buildings and an overflowing lake leaving people stranded in all sorts of locations. The death toll in rain-battered Uttarakhand has mounted to 46 following several incidents of flash floods and landslides in the past few days.
He said that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local forces are cooperating with NDRF and the Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters are also being utilised in rescue and relief operations.
Speaking about the rescue and relief operations in Kerala, Shahedi said that 11 teams of NDRF are also on-ground in the rain-affected state for relief and rescue operations.
“Situation is normal in Kerala, but damage was caused in Kottayam and Idukki districts and 23 people lost their lives in these districts. Trapped people have been evacuated. NDRF is in the state as a precautionary measure as water is being released from dams at some places. In case of any calamity, the situation will be monitored,” he added.
India Meteorological Department on Wednesday continued its orange alert warning following heavy rains in Kerala.
According to official estimates, heavy rains in Kerala have claimed the lives of 27 people. Of these, 14 deaths were reported in the Kottayam district, 10 in the Idukki district, and one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode districts.

Nainital- Kaladhungi road reopens for traffic, tourists safe: DGP Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Director-General of Police Ashok Kumar on Wednesday said that the route to Nainital from Kaladhungi, which was blocked due to heavy rain that triggered a series of landslides, has been reopened and that tourists have safely left the area.
“The route for Nainital from Kaladhungi has re-opened. All the tourists stuck at that place have left and are safe,” said the DGP. The senior police officer has however said that the main road from Haldwani to Almora continues to be blocked and it will take time to restore the connectivity.
“The Garhwal region has opened, Chaar Dham Yatra has started there. However, the weather will be down till today’s noon in the Kumaon region, but it will open eventually,” he added.
DGP said that around 45 to 50 casualties have taken place due to heavy rains, floods, landslides in the state during the last three days and efforts are on to restore the connectivity in the areas which have been cut off.

Meanwhile, dry weather is likely to prevail in Uttarakhand and its adjoining areas over the next three days, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday. In a tweet, the weather agency said, “Significant reduction in rainfall activity likely over Uttarakhand from today, October 19, 2021.”

Construction of damaged Gaula bridge to start within 15 days: Uttrakhand CM Dhami

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday assured the residents of the Gaulapar area that the construction of the damaged approach road of the Gaula bridge would start within 15 days.
Dhami was at the Circuit House in the Kathgodam area of the Haldwani district, where he was hearing the grievances of the public. “The head organisations of the area also met Dhami regarding the problems of the area, on which he assured them that their problems would be resolved on priority. He said that the government is always with people and is always ready to help them. He asked people to stay patient in this hour of disaster,” a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s office said.
Disaster Management Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, Mayor Jogendra Pal Singh Rautela, DGP Ashok Kumar, Commissioner Sushil Kumar, DIG Nilesh Anand Bhare, District Magistrate Dhiraj Singh Garbyal, Additional District Magistrate Ashok Joshi besides public representatives were present.
