Supplementary Budget: UP govt committed to pay every penny of sugarcane farmers

Lucknow, Aug 18: The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has made provision of additional budget in the supplementary budget giving special attention to the sugarcane farmers here on Wednesday.

In the supplementary budget, the Uttar Pradesh Government has made a loan arrangement for the sugar mill of the Co-operative Sugar Mills Association to make the payment of due cane price of farmers. Through this, the state government is going to give further impetus to sugarcane yield and the sugar production in the state.

Among the biggest policy triumphs of the Yogi Government in Uttar Pradesh has been it’s resolve to transform the lives of farmers and making them self-reliant and prosperous.

Over 45.74 lakh sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been paid a record cane price payment of more than Rs 1,40,000 crore between 2017-2021 which indicates the pro-farmer stance of the government.

The payment made by the BJP-led UP government is twice the amount that was made by the former Bahujan Samaj Party government and 1.5 times more than the Samajwadi Party government.

As soon as the Yogi Government came to power, it changed the fate of sugarcane farmers by making a record payment. There are more than 45.74 lakh sugarcane supplier farmers in the state and about 67 lakh farmers are associated with sugarcane cultivation.

The state government has crushed more than 3,868 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in UP with a record production of 427.30 lakh tonnes of sugar, including three previous crushing seasons and the current crushing season 2020-21.

The Yogi Adityanath government has also cleared arrears worth Rs 10,661 crore, pending since the Akhilesh government, to cane farmers.

Sugar mills that got shut during the previous governments were revived by the Yogi Adityanath government and the state now ranks first in sugar production in the country.

In another record production, a total of 261.72 crore litres of ethanol has been produced in the state through 54 distilleries between 2017 and January 2021.

Today, 47 per cent of the sugar production in the country is being produced in Uttar Pradesh. The sugarcane sector contributes 8.45 per cent to the state’s GDP and 20.18 per cent to the GDP of the agriculture sector. Even during the lockdown, not a single sugar mill was closed in the state. Production continued in all 119 sugar mills.
